Accessibility in the Library

A help point for those looking for accessibility resources and services at the Union library.

Using an E-book

An ebook is an electronic version of a print book and can benefit users due to accessibility features like larger text size and contrast.

To find an ebook, search the Library's catalog and use the Format filter to locate ebooks in our library.

Click on the ebook's title for more detailed information about the book. Then click on the View eBook button on the right side of the screen in the "Access Options" box. For most of our ebooks, this will take you to an ESBCO page where you will have a few different options for reading the ebook. Please note, that not all ebooks have all format options

Format Options

1. PDF Full Text: This opens the ebook in a PDF format and allows you to scroll through pages, click through pages, or navigate with an interactive table of contents on the left side of the screen. You can download or print pages from this screen. You can also search the book. You can zoom in with this display. However, depending on the book, you may not be able to change the contrast. (Some books will add a highlight to the text in an attempt to add contrast).

2. EPUB Full Text: This option opens the book in a similar manner as the PDF Full Text, but was created specifically for ebooks. The EPUB Full Text option includes an interactive table of contents on the left side of the screen and arrows at the bottom of the screen for changing pages. This option allows you to use contrast and other visual settings not available in the PDF version.

3. Full Download: This option is useful if you plan to read the book at a later date when you will not have internet access. Please note, that you will need to create a free MyEBSCO account and download Adobe Digital Editions to your computer or device to use ebooks in the Full Download option. This option is like checking out a physical book from the library and access will depend on availability. You can choose the download type as PDF or EPUB. The book will be available for use in Adobe Digital Editions for the specified check-out length.
