Accessibility in the Library

A help point for those looking for accessibility resources and services at the Union library.

Finding a Library Book in the Catalog

The Union Library has thousands of print and electronic books. You can search for library books using the Union Library's online catalog with a search box, "Search Books," at the center of the Library's homepage.

You can search for a book using the book title, author's name, or a topic. When using a topic, try searching a broader topic first. After typing in your search terms, press the "search" button.

From the results list, you can use the filters on the left hand side to further narrow your results. You can also scroll through the list of results to find the title you are wanting.

Click on the title of a book to find more detailed information such as a full summary, table of contents (if available), publication information, and location.

Once you have found the physical book, you may want to look at the table of contents and index to see if the book includes the information you need. Usually, you will not need to read the entire book for your research project. However, you will want to read the section or chapter to ensure you have enough context.

Checking Out a Book

To check out a book, bring the book and your Student ID to the circulation desk. They will check your book out to you. For checkout time lengths, please see our Using the Library page

Books on Reserve will be located at the Circulation Desk and can be checked out for the specified time at the Circulation Desk.

Please note: Books in the Reference Collection cannot be checked out.

Using Filters to Narrow a Search

Typically, when using the library's online catalog to find books on a particular subject, you will want to start with a broad search or more general search terms. You can then add search terms or narrow your search after seeing the results list of a general search. For example: If you want to find a book on the effects of deforestation on jaguars, you might start with a search on jaguars or one on deforestation before trying to combine the search terms.

The Library's online catalog has filters to help you narrow your search. The following are some popular filters:

  • Held By Library - This filter gives you the option of choosing a library such as the Main campus library or a regional campus
  • Format - This filter allows you to select the type of resource you want like print books or ebooks.
  • Publication Year - This filter will narrow your search based on the year of publication
