Periodicals are publications such as journal articles, newspaper articles, or magazine articles that are published over a certain amount of time. These can be weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, or quarterly publications.
Citations for print periodicals contain the title of the periodical, which is considered as the container, along with the volume and issue number. The date of the issue, as well as the page range of the article, is a part of the citation.
General format:
Author(s) name. "Title of Journal Article." Title of Periodical (container), volume, issue, date, pages.
*All citations must be double spaced with a hanging indent (the second line of citations should be indented by .5 inches)*
Example:
Tewell, Eamon. "The Problem with Grit: Dismantling Deficit Thinking in Library Instruction." Portal: Libraries and the Academy, vol. 20, no. 1, Jan. 2020, 137-159.
Electronic periodicals citations contain a few more core elements. The title of the database is considered to be the second container. With electronic periodicals, a DOI (digital object identifier) needs to be in the citation. If there is no DOI, then a permalink needs to be in the citation. If an online article does not have a DOI or permalink, only then use a URL.
Citations for magazine and newspaper articles online are formatted the same way as electronic articles found in databases.
General Format:
Author. "Title of Journal Article." Title of Periodical (container), volume, issue, date, pages. Title of Database (container 2). URL/DOI (location). Access Date.
*All citations must be double spaced with a hanging indent (the second line of citations should be indented by .5 inches)*
